Examples of different montages:

BlacKkKlansman montage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_QccgBBEHc&has_verified=1

It’s a montage of real life footage of protests, riots and interviews linking to white supremacy and white supremists horrific actions. The mood of the montage is thoughtful and meaningful, it makes you think about how horrible these peoples actions are. The music used is slow and powerful, it has the effect of making you think more deeply about what’s being shown on screen. The theme of the montage is white supremacists and their actions in the USA. The editing complements the theme because it is quite slow paced and emphasises the very emotional content of the videos.

Creed 2 montage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR9F-fKEP10

It is a training montage for a boxing match, it shows him pushing himself to his limits physically in preparation for the match as well as showing his opponent preparing. The mood of the montage is inspiring, it’s showing determination, hard work and what it takes to win. The music used is tense and fast paced, it builds tension and makes everything more intense, it also emphasises the struggle he is going through and him pushing through it. The theme is training montage/determination. The editing complements the theme because it moves quickly and flows, which mirrors the training and the actual match.

Locations Research:

I will shoot in outside locations so that I can follow Covid-19 regulations whilst shooting. The locations I will shoot are the streets around crosspool, lydgate park and redmires reservoirs.

All these locations are public so i will need to take precautions to make sure i am not interfering with the public or getting in anyone’s way. These locations are suitable for my montage because they are large areas with big open spaces which can be used to demonstrate loneliness.

Research:

I want to find out the most successful way to make a montage.

I looked at these two sources to help me find this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_QccgBBEHc&has_verified=1 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SR9F-fKEP10 . They are both secondary sources.

In the first montage I researched was from the film BlacKkKlansman, it uses slow paced editing and music to create a mood of thoughtfulness and reflection. This is good because it fits the theme well and successfully archives what it is trying to. The second montage I looked at was from the film Creed 2. This montage was quick paced with fast editing and upbeat music, this matches the mood and purpose of the montage well.

After researching these two montages i’ve seen that the montage from BlacKkKlansman is more useful to me than the one from Creed 2. This is because it matches the mood of my montage much more closely and is successful at creating an emotional response in its audience which i’m aiming to do with my own montage.

Doing this research has helped with the creation of my own montage because it has shown me a successful example of a montage that is meaningful and creates a deep atmosphere. Because of this research I will be able to produce a better montage that will show my theme more clearly.

  1. Your montage research is done, now you just need to research locations you could use to shoot your montage. Explain where you will shoot and why it is suitable for your montage (in general).
